Linda Styles
Ceramics
Linda Styles’s extraordinary ceramics reflect a remarkable life. Behind the savage elegance of her ceramics lies a restless spirit and a rich but frequently dark experience. Her journey through life has followed a jagged course - from a banal and dysfunctional suburban childhood, teenage runaway years, which led her to find solace in the extended family of the infamous early 70’s Freak Subculture of Ladbroke Grove, she danced her way across London, Switzerland and Germany. Linda moved to Cornwall in 1976 and became a wildly bohemian purveyer of female vanity. Somewhere along the way, she has also found time to to become a mother, gain a 1st class Honours, teach Art to adults with learning difficulties, FE and HE, every one of these kaleidoscopic experiences having helped to shape her into the potent and uncompromising artist that she is today.
Bebe Caron 2006
“Linda’s ceramics are instantly recognisable, created in a style that is uniquely her own. There is a dynamic tension between the figurative and abstract elements of her work, which often contain intriguing undertones”.
Brian Stewart 2007
"The undertones are autobiographical and necessarily dark but I hope that the overriding essence of my work is to do with optimism, hope and faith as opposed to despair. Vivre la difference"!
