Jones, Charlotte
Ceramics
Since graduating from Falmouth College of Art in 2001, where she studied BA(Hons) Studio Ceramics, Charlottes ceramics have been exhibited nationally. The colours and patterns from the Cornish land/seascape inspires her work, each pot represents an element of her immediate environment.
Charlottes work follows her interest in collage putting together parts to make a whole. All the work is self coloured stoneware, using local Cornish clay with oxides added.
The handbuilt asymmetrical shape must produce a silhouette that is lifted and constantly moving (continuous curve). The rims are pinched and uneven resembling slate edges and suggesting a sculptural form. Each piece is nurtured slowly, handbuilt, scraped and burnished with a pebble. This time rich process produces a surface, which echoes wind polished geology, time weathered rocks or pebbles smoothed by surf. The pots are polished again after firing. Sizes range from small pebble bowls 4cm x 8 cm to landscape vessels 27cmx 35cm.
