A lot of my time is spent on the beach looking for interesting pieces of wood to mount my carvings - often the driftwood itself can spark a suggestion of a particular bird and it also adds an extra sculptural quality to the work.
I use pine to carve the birds, the grain of this wood compliments their form and plumage. Every piece of wood is different, and therefore every carving has it's own charm.
Living near the Hayle Estuary is a great inspiration for me. Here I can observe the birds in their natural surroundings. I first draw them in groups producing several different poses; this I feel helps my work to flow.
