SELECTED MAKER

Gibson, Hilary Jean
Printmaking

Hilary's most recent achievement was her book Godolphin, written and illustrated as part of the MA:Illustration Authorial Practice. The book, for which she received a distinction, is available from Trelowarren.
Now also available is a Godolphin 2012 Calendar, which will be selling at the C.C.A Exhibition at Penlee House.
She graduated from Saint Martins School of Art, London in 1979 with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic Design specialising in Illustration. She then spent many years as an illustrator, with agents, in house studio for advertising and packaging but mostly freelance.
Originally from Essex, she moved to Brighton and took a PGCE Art Teacher's Certificate at Sussex University in 1980. Whilst teaching she continued to illustrate.
It was during her 15 years in Brighton that she spent time extensively learning the skills of printmaking, focusing on etching and lithography, under Anne D'Arcy-Hughes which culminated in a Printmaking Certificate with distinction from the University of Brighton in 1994 before Hilary moved to Cornwall.
Hilary's MA in the History of Modern Art & Design (UCF 1994-1997 and more recent MA in Illustration: Authorial Practice |(UCF 2008-2010) merge her interests in art histories, narratives and drawing.
Direct observational drawing is the fundamental basis of all her work, usually recording the truth in a sketchbook as a visual diary, with annotated notes which are developed into drawings and etchings, which reveal the objective truth but also a fascination in the fantasy of reality.
She is greatly inspired by the Medieaval and Romanticism.
Her prints have been exhibited widely, most notably in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where she sold the entire etching edition of "The Long Man of Wilmington".
