SELECTED MAKER

Downing, Paula
Ceramics

My work varies in size from around 15 cm (6 ins) up to around 210cm (7 feet). All the pieces are hand built, using mainly coiling and slab building techniques and very few tools, I do not possess a potter's wheel.

The clays are various but usually heavily grogged bodies, and oxides, slips and more recently lustres, used for decoration. The forms have evolved through studying the 'Marks on the Landscape, the mine stacks, standing stones and the rugged coastline. The surface textures and patterns are to do with the colours of the land and sea, wild flowers and fauna, and the dramatic changes of light and weather that take place on the North Cornwall Coast.
