Tricia Christian, MA Glass
I have a deep love of Cornwall and nature which informs my glasswork. From detailed reproductions of actual places to abstract designs I depict the essence of Cornwall.
All my work is unique and I build the picture as I cut, shape and prepare the glass for the kiln allowing the glass to dictate the finished work. I use colours which reflect the soft Cornish lighting and invoke the feel and taste of the county.
Much work is to commission and wall mounted pictures are extremely popular often including a feature of personal value to the client, for example their boat or home. I also make pieces celebrating special occasions like christenings, retirements and graduations.
Extremes fascinate me and I enjoy drawing together diverse elements, for example glass is three thousand years old and I apply it to contemporary pieces today.
The use of delicate glass with strong iron pleases me; both materials are won from the earth, both take heat to form and yet the contrast between the two elements in a finished piece provides a pleasing tension.
Working with my husband John, an Artist Blacksmith, we create unique forms of hand forged, sculpted and polished iron combined with fused glass that has used the iron as its mould and will fit no other profile.
