My hand-dyed silk/viscose (18%/82%) SHIBORI scarves have been made using the colours of the sky, the sea, the moors and the Cornish coastline as my inspiration. Individually hand-beaded, the scarves are fully washable using a mild detergent and hand-hot water. Drape to dry, do not iron.
Shibori is the word used to describe various methods of preparing fabric using folding, wrapping, twisting or pleating. Although now predominantly practiced in Japan it is thought that the Shibori technique originated in China. Both countries used Shibori as far back as the Seventh and Eighth centuries.
The beauty and delight of working with silk velvet using this method is the element of spontaneity that always occurs. However much care is taken in applying the dyes there is always the magic of the colours ‘doing their own thing’ and creating wonderful patterns that add another dimension to an already beautiful piece of fabric. Every piece is therefore unique and I feel that it should be considered as textile art.
The process of Shibori is labour intensive from beginning to end to make a special piece of work that cannot be produced commercially even today.
